Pros and Cons of Permeable Pavers

Before you make the decision to install permeable pavers, there are some important factors you should consider. Overall, these are very effective structures that add much in the way of runoff management for your landscape. The decision hinges primarily on the unique needs of your land, and how well permeable pavers will incorporate. To assist our consumers in making an informed decision, we’ve compiled a list of the advantages and disadvantages of using porous materials.

What Are Permeable Pavers?

Permeable paving materials are not specifically a singular item, but rather a group of materials and landscaping techniques that deal with using holes (minute in size, or larger in some cases) to manage water runoff. They’ve proven especially effective in reducing standing water, as well as controlling natural pollutants from rainwater and other sources.

Advantages:

  • Manages excessive runoff. Urban runoff can create a slew of issues, some insidious and some just plain obnoxious.
  • Reduces erosion. Permeable pavers are less likely to weather, as are the structures they protect by mitigating runoff.
  • Controls pollutants. Permeable pavers will assist in capturing hard substances in urban rainfall, such as metals present and chemicals that may be harmful to surface plant life.
  • Assists garden ecology. Trees and large shrubs are given the root-space they need, unimpeded by stifling and suffocating standard materials.
  • Versatile aesthetic. These come in a very wide variety of appearances, offering the homeowner unparalleled options in decoration and landscape planning.

Disadvantages:

We wouldn’t have our consumers accept our word blindly, and in fact there are some aspects of to consider before going forward to install permeable pavers.

  • Poor performance on sloped land. If your yard slopes at a twenty-percent or higher, the effectiveness of permeable pavers is dramatically reduced.
  • Minor maintenance. No more than traditional pavers, really, but it bears mention that permeable pavers should be maintained once every few months. This may require sweeping, or even vacuuming depending on the type and location.
  • Less suitable for frigid climates. This isn’t much of a concern here in Maryland, as the temperatures never really become dangerous for permeable pavers here. This is more of an issue in places where chipping ice off the surface can potentially harm the structure.
  • Higher price per-installation. While permeable pavers are likely to save you money (and frustration) in the long run, it’s important to note that they are slightly more expensive in initial installation.
