There’s plenty to worry about when it comes to your landscape in the winter. Plants need particular care, the grass needs attention before the coming spring, your hardscape and water fixtures need to be covered; even the trees are having problems.

But aren’t you forgetting something? It might not readily come to mind, but did you know that your driveway is exposed to some unique risks in the winter, too? Even further, you might be making its problems worse. Find out how, and what to do to fix it, by following along with the experts at Four Seasons Landscaping!

The Importance of Winter Driveway Care

So why is it such a big deal, and what are these wintertime risks we’re talking about? Well when it comes down to it, there are three big risks in the winter for your driveway installation: temperature, moisture, and chemicals. Any one of these is problem enough, but in the winter your drive is likely to see all of them in combination, which can result in needing a new driveway in the very near future.

Avoid this fate by doing (or not doing!) the following:

  • Mistake 1: Ignoring your driveway. Pretty much the worst way to handle any problem is to just ignore it, and that goes for your driveway, too. Constant freezing and unfreezing water is a huge risk, and tends to cause lots of cracks that are going to result in needing a new drive much sooner. So be sure to clear debris, and always treat ice properly.
  • Mistake 2: Having an untreated driveway. Sealing and waterproofing your driveway installation should be a top priority, and should be re-done every couple of years. With a protective coating, water and stray debris pose a far lesser risk.
  • Mistake 3: Using a heavy shovel. Stuck-on ice and snow are a huge pain, and it can be easy to take out your rage on some stubborn ice formations. But don’t! Use a plastic snow shovel for one, since it isn’t going to be chipping your drive as readily. Also avoid scraping; just get the snow and ice down to a thin layer, and then use a treatment to remove it. The right treatment, that is.
  • Mistake 4: Using the wrong chemicals. Rock salt sure is handy. If you want to install a new driveway, that is. This common and  unfortunate snow solution corrodes driveway pavers and leads to frequent re-freezing, resulting in marring and cracks that are hard to address with maintenance alone. Instead, seek snow treatments that use calcium chloride, or, even better, magnesium chloride. Much safer, and more effective, too.
