Custom Paver Patio Installation for Homeowners in Arlington, VA

For nearly two decades, Four Seasons Landscaping has taken Arlington backyards from underused grass to finished outdoor rooms built around pavers. Our design-build team manages the entire job — layout, excavation, base engineering, laying, and final details — so you’re not coordinating separate crews.

Arlington’s rowhomes, colonials, and townhome lots don’t leave much room for wasted space, which is exactly why a well-planned patio matters here. We design each one around how your household will actually use it — weeknight dinners, weekend guests, or a quiet spot near the fire pit — then build the base to hold up through Northern Virginia’s freeze-thaw cycles year after year.

Searching for a paver patio contractor near Arlington who won’t cut corners on the base work? That’s our specialty. Reach out to Four Seasons Landscaping for a free consultation on your Arlington, VA patio project.

Paver Patios We Build in Arlington, VA

We build to match how Arlington homeowners actually use their outdoor space:

Outdoor Dining Patios

Laid out around your table and traffic flow, oriented for sun or shade depending on your yard, and connected to the kitchen or back door by a clean, direct path.

Fire Pit & Lounge Patios

An open, conversation-focused layout centered on a fire pit or fireplace, keeping the space usable well into fall and early spring.

Tiered & Sloped-Lot Patios

Arlington’s terrain isn’t always flat — we build stepped, multi-level patios with retaining walls and steps that work with the grade instead of fighting it.

Connecting Walkways & Steps

Matching or complementary paver walkways and steps that tie the patio into the driveway, front walk, or garden beds for a cohesive property.

Full Backyard Living Spaces

The patio anchors the rest of the design — fire features, outdoor kitchens, seating walls, pergolas, and lighting all planned together rather than added piecemeal.

Why Arlington Homeowners Choose a Paver Patio

Most homeowners weigh a paver patio against a poured concrete slab at some point. In Arlington’s climate, pavers tend to hold up better over time for a few clear reasons:

They don't crack the way a slab does.

A concrete slab is one solid piece, so ground movement from winter freeze-thaw cycles shows up as cracks. A paver patio is made of hundreds of individual units on a flexible base, so it shifts with the ground rather than splitting.

Damage stays local, not permanent.

If a paver stains, chips, or you need access to a utility line, we lift and replace individual units and the repair blends right in. A concrete slab patches visibly, if at all.

Far more design flexibility.

Between brick, natural stone, tumbled pavers, and large-format concrete units, there’s a range of colors, textures, and laying patterns concrete can’t offer.

Water moves off the surface better.

The jointed design and engineered base underneath drain more effectively than a flat slab, cutting down on pooling near the house.

It's a stronger selling point.

A finished paver patio reads as real outdoor living space to buyers, and Arlington’s competitive resale market rewards that kind of finished detail.

We know the region.

Two decades of building across Northern Virginia and the greater DC area means we’ve dealt with the clay-heavy soil and drainage quirks that come with Arlington lots specifically.

Our Paver Patio Installation Process in Arlington, VA

The pavers on top are the easiest part to get right — what’s underneath is what decides whether the patio stays flat for twenty years or starts sinking in five. Here’s how we approach every job:

1. On-Site Design Visit

We walk your Arlington property, assess the grade and drainage, and talk through size, shape, and how you’ll use the space. You get a firm layout and estimate before any work begins.

2. Choosing Materials & Pattern

We help you settle on a paver type and laying pattern — herringbone, running bond, basket weave — based on your home’s style and budget.

3. Excavation & Grading

We excavate to the right depth and grade the site so water drains away from the foundation. This step gets skipped or rushed more than any other, and it’s the top cause of patio failure later.

4. Base Construction

A compacted crushed-stone base, usually 4–6 inches deep and deeper where soils are poor, goes in layered and compacted, topped with a leveling bed of sand. This is what actually holds the patio in place long-term.

5. Setting the Pavers

Each paver goes down by hand in the chosen pattern, with even joints and precise cuts along edges and curves.

6. Locking the Edges

Edge restraints keep the perimeter from spreading, and polymeric sand fills the joints, hardening to resist weeds and shifting.

7. Final Compaction & Walkthrough

We compact the finished surface, clean up the site, and walk the completed patio with you, including basic maintenance tips.

Paver Patio FAQs for Arlington Homeowners

What does a paver patio installation cost in Arlington, VA?

Pricing for an Arlington paver patio depends on the square footage involved, the material you select (concrete pavers, brick, or natural stone), how much excavation and drainage work the site needs, and any extras like a fire pit, seating wall, or steps. Simple concrete-paver installations land on the lower end of the range, while larger or multi-level natural-stone patios cost more. Four Seasons Landscaping puts together a firm number after visiting your property, but most Arlington projects fall somewhere between $10,000 and $50,000+, depending on scope.

Is a paver patio a better choice than poured concrete in Arlington?

For most Arlington properties, yes. Poured concrete forms one continuous slab, so when the ground shifts during Northern Virginia’s winter freeze-thaw cycles, it cracks. A paver patio is built from individual units on a flexible base, so it moves with the ground instead of splitting, and any single unit can be swapped out if it’s damaged. Concrete is usually cheaper upfront, but pavers tend to outperform it on repairability, appearance, and lifespan.

Can a paver patio work on a sloped Arlington lot?

Yes — sloped and uneven yards are common across Arlington’s older neighborhoods, and it’s a type of project we handle regularly. We use retaining walls, steps, and careful grading to build tiered patios that follow the natural slope rather than fighting it, which often turns a difficult section of yard into the most usable part of the property.

How long does a paver patio installation take in Arlington?

Most residential jobs in Arlington run anywhere from several days to about two weeks, depending on the size of the patio, site conditions, drainage requirements, and any additional features. The bulk of that time goes into excavation and base work, since that’s what determines whether the patio holds up long-term. You’ll get a specific timeline as part of your estimate, and we keep you posted as the project moves.

Doug and his team at Four Seasons are excellent! Four years ago, Doug designed an entirely new front walkway plus all new shrubs and trees. Within the first year, it grew beautifully and today, it is stunning. We were so pleased, we’ve gone back to Doug two more times. Two years ago to fill in an area in our backyard that lost so many trees over the years due to storms — it is a lovely oasis in our backyard today. Then less than a year ago, another storm took out a few of our front yard trees and Doug planted a new bed of replacement trees. The landscaping looks so good, the delivery people even comment on it! We keep going back to Doug because he creates beautiful designs with high quality products. Plus his team does excellent work. We highly recommend Four Seasons!

"I feel like I'm at the W" That was a quote from one of our friends when they first saw our new patio that Four Seasons Landscaping built for us. This is the second time I've used Four Seasons Landscaping to install a patio at a house we've owned. Their work is TOP NOTCH. Doug and his artisans transformed a poorly designed patio into a backyard oasis. As can be seen from the before an after photos, we went from having a limited and cluttered outdoor living space to one where we now entertain year round. We have an expanded pool deck with Travertine tiles that stay cool in the summer with lounge seating on once side and firepit that seats 10-12 off the other. We now have a brand new outdoor kitchen on a raised patio off the main kitchen in the house. Additionally, a second raised landing was installed to provide a walkout from our sunroom which leads to an outstanding fireplace on the main patio area (All flagstone). At our most recent holiday party, everyone who saw the patio thought it was gorgeous. Tastefully and thoughtfully laid out with amazing craftsmanship. Many said that it felt like they were at a resort. If you are looking for someone that takes pride in their work and does it with the utmost care and attention to detail, I would highly recommend Doug and Four Seasons Landscaping for your next project.

It was a pleasure working with Doug and his crew on our daughter's large hardscaping project--a larger front stoop, a new and longer retaining wall, beautiful, lighted steps and a front patio. The entrance to their home went from narrow and downright dangerous to welcoming and gorgeous! Doug was creative and flexible throughout the project as our ideas and vision evolved (our daughter requested non-invasive/native-if-possible plants), and his suggestion to create a patio space in front and add lighting to the steps for safety was inspired. His crew was communicative, reliable, and did top-notch work. We also had them seal a patio in back and improve drainage, and plant a tree to commemorate our grandson's birth. Although the original plan called for new plantings, we decided to add perennial flowers for now and complete the planting vision at a later time. We have had many experiences with contractors, good and bad, and Four Seasons Landscaping & Nursery was among the BEST we have ever used!
