Pavers Installation

Paver Installation Serving Montgomery County, DC Metro & Surrounding Areas

Four Seasons Landscaping installs pavers for every hard surface on your property, driveways, walkways, patios, pool decks, and steps, in concrete pavers, clay brick, and natural stone. A family-owned design-build firm based in Damascus, MD and operating since 2002, we handle the full job: design, site prep, the engineered base, laying, and finish.

Pavers are the most versatile paving surface you can choose. The same material family that makes a welcoming front walkway also makes a driveway that carries vehicle weight for decades and a patio built for entertaining, all tied together in complementary colors and patterns so your whole property reads as one design. Whatever the surface, the quality is decided underground: a paver installation is only as durable as the base and edge work beneath it, and that is where our crews are exacting.

Why Pavers Outperform Poured Concrete and Asphalt

Across driveways, walkways, and patios alike, interlocking pavers beat poured concrete and asphalt on the measures that matter over a surface’s life:

  • They move with the ground instead of cracking. A poured slab or asphalt surface is one rigid mass that cracks when the ground freezes and heaves. A paver surface is many small units over a flexible base, so it flexes rather than fractures through Maryland winters.
  • Any paver can be lifted and reset. Stain one, crack one, or need to reach a pipe underneath, and the affected pavers lift out and go back seamlessly. Concrete and asphalt repairs leave a permanent patch.
  • Ready to use immediately. Unlike poured concrete, which needs days to cure, a finished paver surface can be walked and driven on right away.
  • A design range hard surfaces cannot match. Dozens of colors, shapes, textures, and laying patterns, plus contrasting borders and inlays, let a paver surface complement your home instead of just covering ground.
  • Better traction and drainage. Textured surfaces and jointed, permeable-capable systems handle water and footing better than a smooth slab, reducing pooling and slick spots.
  • Long-term value. A professionally installed paver surface lasts for decades with simple maintenance and reads as a premium, finished feature to buyers.

Paver Surfaces We Install

We install pavers for every hard surface around a property. The projects homeowners ask us for most:

Paver Driveways

A paver driveway is the first thing people see and the hardest-working surface on the property. We build driveways on a deep, heavily compacted base rated for vehicle loads, so they resist rutting and stay level under daily traffic. Beyond durability, a paver driveway sets the tone for the whole home’s curb appeal, with border and pattern options that a plain concrete or asphalt drive cannot offer. This is one of our signature paver applications.

Paver Walkways & Garden Paths

Walkways connect the property and guide how people move through it, from the driveway to the front door, around the house, or through the garden. We build front entry walks, side paths, and meandering garden paths in materials and patterns that tie into your patio, driveway, and plantings so everything flows as one design. Proper base and edge work keeps a walkway even and trip-free for years.

Paver Patios

Pavers are a top choice for patios because they flex with the ground, resist cracking, and offer endless design options for an outdoor living space.

Paver Pool Decks

Around a pool, pavers provide slip-resistant, repairable footing that handles constant moisture and the demands of chlorine and salt systems.

See our Pool Decks page for details >

Paver Steps, Borders & Accents

The details tie a property together. We build paver and natural-stone steps that move safely between levels, plus borders, edging, and inlays that frame driveways, walkways, and patios with contrasting color and texture. These accents are often what make a paver installation look custom rather than standard.

Paver Materials: Concrete, Brick & Natural Stone

We install three paver families, each suited to a different priority:

  • Concrete pavers – the most versatile and budget-friendly, with the widest range of shapes, colors, and modern large-format looks. The workhorse choice for most surfaces.
  • Clay brick – warm, classic, and color-stable for decades because the color runs all the way through. Ideal for traditional and historic homes.
  • Natural stone – flagstone, bluestone, and travertine for a premium, one-of-a-kind surface where every piece is unique. We offer dedicated stone-paver installation for upscale projects.

Our Paver Installation Process

With pavers, the visible surface is the last ten percent. The base and edge work underneath decide whether the surface stays flat for decades or ripples and settles. Our process is built around getting that foundation right:

Step 1 — Consultation & Design

We visit your property, look at the surface you want paved, the grade, drainage, and access, and talk through materials, patterns, and budget. For driveways, we also assess load and vehicle access. You get a clear plan and estimate before work starts.

Step 2 — Material & Pattern Selection

We help you choose the paver family (concrete, brick, or stone) and the laying pattern and borders that fit the application and your home’s style.

Step 3 — Excavation & Grading

We excavate to the proper depth for the surface, deeper for driveways than walkways, and grade so water drains away from the house and the surface. Cutting depth here is the top cause of failure later, so we do not.

Step 4 — Engineered Base

We install and compact a crushed-stone base in lifts, sized to the load the surface will carry, then a leveling layer of bedding sand. This is the structural heart of any paver installation.

Step 5 — Laying the Pavers

Each paver is set by hand to the chosen pattern, with tight, consistent joints and clean cuts at borders, curves, and edges.

Step 6 — Edge Restraints & Polymeric Sand

We lock the perimeter with edge restraints so the pavers cannot spread, then sweep in polymeric sand that hardens to resist weeds, insects, and shifting.

Step 7 — Compaction, Cleanup & Walkthrough

We compact the finished surface for a locked, level result, clean the site, and walk the project with you, with care tips to keep it looking new.

Paver Installation FAQs

How much does paver installation cost in Maryland?

Paver installation cost in Maryland depends on the surface and its size, the paver material (concrete, brick, or natural stone), site prep and drainage needs, and the application, a load-bearing driveway costs more per square foot than a walkway. Four Seasons Landscaping provides a customized estimate after a free on-site consultation; typical project budgets range from $10,000 to $20,000 up to $50,000 and above for larger or multi-surface projects.

Are pavers better than concrete or asphalt?

For Maryland’s freeze-thaw climate, pavers generally outperform both. Poured concrete and asphalt are rigid and crack when the ground heaves; a paver surface flexes with the ground, individual pavers can be replaced if damaged, and pavers can be used immediately with no cure time. Concrete or asphalt may cost less up front, but pavers usually win on longevity, repairability, and appearance.

Can pavers be used for a driveway?

Yes, and they make an excellent driveway. The key is the base: a paver driveway must be built on a deeper, more heavily compacted base than a walkway or patio so it carries vehicle weight without rutting. Built correctly, a paver driveway handles daily traffic for decades and delivers far more curb appeal than plain concrete or asphalt.

How long does a paver surface last?

A properly installed paver surface can last several decades, often 25 years or more, because the individual pavers are extremely durable and any that shift or stain can be reset or replaced. Lifespan comes down to the base and edge work: a surface built on a deep, well-compacted base with proper drainage and edge restraints far outlasts one laid on a shallow or skipped base.

How do you keep weeds from growing between pavers?

The key is polymeric sand, a jointing sand that hardens when activated with water to lock the joints against weeds, insects, and washout far better than plain sand. Combined with proper edge restraints and a compacted base, it keeps a paver surface tight and low-maintenance for years.

Do paver surfaces need to be sealed?

Sealing is optional but beneficial. A sealer helps resist stains, deepens the paver color, and stabilizes the joint sand, though it needs reapplication every few years. Many surfaces do beautifully unsealed, so we walk you through the trade-offs for your specific application.

How long does paver installation take?

Most residential paver projects take several days to about two weeks, depending on the surface, its size, site conditions, drainage work, and material. Excavation and base work take the most time because they are what make the surface last. We provide a firm timeline in your estimate and keep you updated throughout.
